Diaries, 1836-1838, of John Blackford, and 1838-1845, of Franklin Blackford, both of Ferry Hill Plantation, Washington County, Md., and account book, 1842-1858, of Franklin Blackford for ferriage and family accounts. The diaries include weather observations, details of farm and ferry operations, family and social activities of the Blackford and Knode families and friends, and the activities of slaves (two of whom ran the ferry) and hired workers. John Blackford had extensive business and social dealings with persons in Boonsboro, Hagerstown, and Sharpsburg, Md., and Shepherdstown, Va. (now W. Va.).

John Blackford (1771-1839) was a planter and leading citizen of Boonsboro, Washington County, Md. In addition to his plantation, he owned property in Shepherdstown, Jefferson County, Va. (now W. Va.), was a merchant, and ran a ferry from his Ferry Hill plantation to a site near Shepherdstown. He owned stock in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company and the Boonsboro Turnpike Company.
